My name is Eleanor, and I would like to share one of the many things I learned while in Peru this past summer.

Last summer I went to Peru for two weeks with Ms. Kasic, her husband, and nine other girls. During the trip I learned lots about the culture, the people and the Peruvian traditions. The community in Peru inspired me because they stayed positive even in hard situations. All the people were willing to teach us about the culture. Even though, the culture in Peru has modernized, many people still wear the traditional clothing. I learned about the significance of the traditional clothing. The women in Peru wear skirts, blouses, and bright and beautiful hats. The colors and style represent all the different communities. Over the shoulders the women wear a rectangular cloth secured with a safety pin, called a “llicilla.” Also the women wear wool skirts, called “llamado polleras.” In special events the women wear three or four layers of skirts. Lastly, the Peruvians wear many different kinds of hats. The hats are called “monteras” and they represent social status. Younger kids wear different hats than the adults. When the kids grow up they change hats.

El verano pasado yo fui a Perú por dos semanas con señorita Kasic, su esposo, y nueve otras chicas. Durante este viaje yo aprendí mucho sobre la cultura, la gente y las tradiciones peruanos. La comunidad en Perú me inspiró porque se quedan positivas aun durante etapas difíciles. Toda la gente eran dispuestos a enseñarnos sobre su cultura. Aunque la cultura en Perú ha modernizada, mucha gente todavía lleva la ropa tradicional. Me enseñó sobre el significado de la ropa tradicional. Las mujeres en Perú llevan faldas, blusas, y sombreros muy brillantes y hermosas. Los colores y estilos representan todas las comunidades diferentes. Encima de los hombros las mujeres llevan una tela rectangular cerrado de un imperidible, llamado una llicilla. También las mujeres llevan faldas, llamado polleras, y hecho a lana. En eventos especiales las mujeres llevan tres o cuatro capas de faldas. Último, los peruanos llevan muchos sombreros diferentes. Los sombreros llamados monteras representan posición en la comunidad. Los más jovenes llevan sombreros que son diferentes de los sombreros de los adultos. Cuando los chicos crecen ellos cambian sombreros.
