My name is Emily Rutledge and I am in Spanish 5 at Holland High. I am going to share with you my experience in Guatemala. Last summer I went on a mission trip to Guatemala. I learned a lot about the country and the Guatemalan people. It is a very poor country but the people are very friendly and kind. I fell in love with Guatemala and its people and I would really like to go back in the future. 

In Guatemala I built 21 houses in a village of indigenous Guatemalan people with 39 other people from my church. The indigenous people were very hardworking and it’s amazing how friendly they are. They also helped so much with building the houses. We didn’t speak very much Spanish but the Indigenous people didn’t care and we could still talk with them. It was very hard to leave the kids in the village, they were so sweet and loved us even though they didn’t know us or even speak the same language.

En el verano de 2015 yo fui a Guatemala para un viaje de misión. Yo aprendí mucho sobre el país y los guatemaltecos. Es un país muy pobre pero los guatemaltecos son muy amables y simpáticos. Me enamoré con Guatemala y los guatemaltecos y quiero mucho ir a Guatemala en el futuro. 

En Guatemala yo construí 21 casas en un pueblo de indígenas (guatemaltecos nativos) con 39 otra americanos de mi iglesia. Los indígenas son muy trabajadores y es asombroso que ellos sean muy amables. También ellos ayudaron mucho para construir las casas. Nosotros no hablamos mucho español pero los indígenas no le importaba y nosotros hablaron con ellos. Era muy difícil dejar los niños en el pueblo. Ellos son encantos y nos querían aunque ellos no nos conocieron o hablaron la misma idioma.
