I’d like to start off the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring the Spanish language and the beauty it has brought to my life!

Being bilingual in the Spanish language has made the world both smaller and bigger at the same time. When I travel to the Spanish speaking world, I no longer experience it from an American perspective because I’m able to talk to people and ask questions about what may seem to me to be an odd or interesting cultural custom. I’m able to connect more with the people and learn about their daily lives rather than just the tourist sites.

I have the opportunity to better understand a person’s joys and heartaches, blessings and challenges. Because of this, I have grown to see the same humanity in all the people of the world. We may have borders that define our lands, but there are no borders that define our connectedness to one another.

Me gustaría iniciar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana por honrar el idioma español y la belleza que español ha contribuido a mi vida. Personalmente, ser bilingüe ha expandido mi mundo por hacerlo más grande y más pequeño a la vez.

Cuando viajo al mundo hispanohablante, no viajo con solo la perspectiva estadounidense porque puedo charlar con la gente y preguntarle sobre sus costumbres y la vida diaria. No tengo que descubrir el país a través de solo los sitios turísticos. Yo puedo conectar con la gente a través del idioma.

Tengo la oportunidad de entender mejor las alegrías y angustias de la gente, sus bendiciones y los retos. Por eso, he llegado a ver la humanidad común de toda la gente del mundo. Tenemos fronteras que definen nuestras tierras, pero no existen fronteras que definen nuestra relación con los demás.
