Successes Abound for the HHS Jazz Band in March!

March proved to be a very eventful and successful month for the students of the HHS Jazz Band.
This past Saturday, March 23rd, for the first time ever, the HHS Jazz Band was invited to share a concert with the Holland Christian Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Scott Vandenberg.

Following the performance of the high school jazz ensembles, MSU Jazz Professor and world renowned bassist Rodney Whitaker, along with his band of professional musicians, took the stage to top off an amazing night of live jazz in the Holland community!

During the day, the HHS and HCHS Jazz students had the privilege of working with these incredibly talented musicians, being immersed in rehearsals, sectionals, and improv clinics, which then enabled them to incorporate their learning into the evening performance, proving that the journey is indeed more valuable than the destination. Thank you to Scott Vandenberg and the students of the HCHS Jazz Orchestra for inviting the HHS Jazz Band to share this incredible day of learning and live jazz and for being such gracious hosts!

As luck would have it, this concert came right on the heels of the HHS Jazz Bands' success at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association's District X Jazz Festival at Caledonia HS on March 14th. With their performance of the well-known Mingus tune, "Nostalgia in Times Square," Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday," and "Blue Bossa" by Kenny Dorham, the HHS Jazz Band brought home a Division 1 Superior rating! Congrats to all involved!"
